“More or less it is calculated that by 2024 there will be the container terminal, a transfer terminal because it is expected in some way to solve the viability of the railway with this,” Carlos Ortiz, general director of the EFE, explained in an interview for the EFE Agency. Mexican firm Caxxor Group, who also foresees that within 15 years the port will become “the most important” in Mexico, contemplating the 180 kilometers of a railroad to Durango, where a logistics center will be built.

Within 4 more years, the company in charge plans to finish the first phase of the USMCA corridor, a project that aims to establish a route that facilitates the transport of goods to the Canadian city of Winnipeg, because it is a “center where you can boost Mexican exports ”outside North America. The Corridor would connect the port of Mazatlán in northwestern Mexico with rail, land, and sea routes, with the logistics center of the city of Winnipeg, in Canada, crossing the United States.

The USMCA Corridor will involve an investment of 3.3 billion dollars, of which 700 million will go to the railroad and 900 million to the container terminal, said Carlos Ortiz, adding to the latter that “it is very relevant for the country and for North America a new route, a gateway both to and from the eastern United States ”and that Mazatlán will be the“ closest Mexican port for the United States ”.

Furthermore, thanks to the Corridor, projects are planned in northern states such as Sinaloa, Durango, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and Chihuahua; and in the south, Chiapas, Campeche, Tabasco and Quintana Roo.
